Grey Havens Inn Old Maine at its Best
If you're looking for a peaceful Maine vacation that conjures up the romance of the Maine coast "the way it used to be", we welcome you
to the Grey Havens Inn, an historic Maine bed and breakfast inn located in Georgetown, Maine. This classic shingle style hotel was built in 1904 and has been welcoming guests as a bed and breakfast inn throughout the years.
This is "authentic Maine" - picture yourself on a high craggy bluff looking out over a protected natural harbor and tree covered islands to the North Atlantic. Lighthouses and rocky Maine coastline grace the far distance. You are standing on the magnificent wrap-around covered porch of Grey Havens. The ocean view is absolutely breath-taking and has been the subject of catalog photo shoots, book and magazine covers (Down East Magazine), numerous articles, calendars, and countless weddings. And yet, the atmosphere is unpretentious, warm, and welcoming - everything
an old-fashioned Maine coast inn should be.
A Relaxing Maine Coast Vacation Awaits!
Grey Havens has frequently been referred to as a 'castle-by-the-sea' with its two tall round turrets. Its imposing majesty on the Maine coastline is so proud and clear that the inn is often used as a navigational aid by sailors and local lobstermen. Facing east, the sunrises are truly inspiring - for the early risers among you - and the full moon radiates and shimmers across the water. Our Maine coast inn is a place of relaxation, of peace away from modern distractions such as phones and television. Guests come here to sit, to rejuvenate, to read, and, above all, to escape. There is nowhere quite like it.
There is a deep water dock and two deep moorings, well sheltered even during the worst winter storms. If you want to reach into your soul and find some peace from the rigors of the real world just sit on the dock for an hour or so!
Old-fashioned Maine Charm with Ocean Views
Entry from the porch brings you into the foyer with the grand living and dining rooms to each side.
A massive stone fireplace in the living room serves as a natural gathering
place for guests, whether they choose to relax in a cozy chair and read or enjoy the view through the large window looking onto the porch and ocean beyond.
The view from the dining room is just as special, although lots of people will bring their breakfast onto the porch!
A beautiful open stairway brings you to the second and third floors, each with seven bedrooms, all with private bathrooms. The four round turret rooms are truly romantic with 180 degree panoramic ocean views. Room Six is blessed with its own large balcony, a quiet haven within the Havens. Sit out here on a summer's night and you're sure to be late for bed! All rooms, except Room Nine, have full or limited ocean views.
An Historic Maine Coast Inn Experience
Opened as the "Seguinland" in June, 1904, the inn was built by Walter Reid, who later gave another parcel of his estate to become Reid State Park. The inn is believed to be the last classic "shingle-style" hotel still in operation on the Maine coast. In wonderfully original condition, it has been altered only enough to bow to modern ideas of comfort, with baseboard heat and plenty of bathrooms. In 1904, there were two baths for 26 guest-rooms.
The living room boasts a massive stone fireplace and large window looking onto the porch and ocean beyond. The original piece of glass, when bought down from Rockland in 1904, was said to be the biggest piece of glass in Maine.
Throughout Grey Havens the antique character, historical charm and architectural details give the eyes a true pleasure - features and design that just cannot be replicated in modern construction. It is a comforting and relaxing place far from the troubles of everyday living, - a true haven by the sea, (its name comes from the mythical retreat of the fairies in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings). A glance through the pages of the visitor book is a glimpse into history and the blessings that a real vacation can give.
A Quiet Retreat with Plenty to Do Nearby
Just 1.5 miles past Grey Havens the road dead-ends at the 550 acre Reid State Park, a Maine coast state park with its splendid 'mile beach', crashing surf, natural lagoon, sand dunes and wooded trails. This is wild countryside, deer and turkey abound, and moose are occasionally seen - deer tracks criss-cross the winter garden at Grey Havens.
The peaceful escape of the Grey Havens Inn, however, is just one hour's drive from the international airport at Portland, or two and a half hours from Boston. The local town of Bath is a quaint old ship-building city with a thriving downtown, many fine restaurants and the Maine Maritime Museum. Just six miles from Grey Havens is the famous Robinhood Free Meeting House known far and wide for its culinary excellence. The popular coastal towns of Boothbay Harbor and Camden are only a skip up the coast - by car or boat!

"The location is very peaceful and secluded, but a short drive away from several interesting Maine villages and towns. The hosts were gracious, the blueberry muffins at breakfast were to die for."

"It's old Maine at its best with a long, sweeping veranda overlooking the sea and its own little harbor with tree topped islands, a big, welcoming common room with stone fireplace, and a very charming family of innkeepers."

"A classic Maine luxury, with real Maine people at the helm - real Five Islanders, lobstermen and great people going back generations. No B and B nonsense-- they don't hover --but if you want to hear some great stories, sit back and enjoy."
